iLife 11 Review

iLife is the indispensable software package that comes with every Mac. Over the years, it has evolved to include only iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band. (iTunes is no longer considered part of the package, since it is available for everyone, Windows or Mac.

iDVD seems to be going the way of the 8-track tape. Some users have complained of problems with their photo library with this new edition- I had no problems at all, and I have an enormous 45,000 photo collection. Installation was perfectly smooth and fairly fast.

Users of iLife know that the iPhoto application is an essential way to organize, load, save, rate, and edit photos. In this iteration, they improved overall stability, made it faster, and added some nice little fixes.

The one I like best is the ability to do almost everything in \"full screen\" mode. I have heard people complain about this and I don\'t understand it. When I am editing or organizing photos, I don\'t want to multi-task. Instead, I want full use of my screen.

In this edition, they improve the book-making functions. If you have never printed one of the amazing iPhoto books, you have to- they have to be seen to be believed!

GarageBand provides all the tools necessary (rhythm assistance, piano, and guitar lessons) to craft a musical hit! The iLife 11 package is worth it for this program alone. Any other full featured studio software would cost around $200 to $500 for the same features.

The really fun part of this package is the iMovie movie trailers function. This part of the demo was boring and didn\'t do it justice. It takes only about 5 minutes to pop your own clips into one of the movie trailer templates. What comes out on the other end is an amazing, funny, totally professional-looking movie trailer that will blow away you and your family!

Overall, this is a great little update to the software, well worth the money.

More powerful than the entry-level MacBook and more portable than Apple's 15- and 17-inch laptops, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is ideal for students and travellers. Its mid-2010 update isn't as radical as that enjoyed by the bigger MacBook Pros, like the 15inch version we reviewed here, but its faster processors and better graphics chip are still very welcome.
