Part of the love of the Internet is the ability to be in real time contact with friends and family. If you’re new to communicating online or looking for ways to communicate faster, you’ll need these computer tips for using an instant message (IM) platform. With a little time, you can become a very savvy IM user.
Downloading the Software
Depending on the type of IM software you’re using, it can take a matter of minutes to download and install the application. You’ll likely want to save the program in your program files so you can easily access it or add a shortcut to your desktop.
Setting Up Your Profile
Your profile is how you’ll be seen to other IM users and the online community that supports the program. You can choose virtually any name or combination of names and numbers to give yourself a user name, such as “theKool1.” Be sure to make it easy to remember though. You’ll also have the option to fill in private and public information along with a picture or avatar so other people can find you.
Adding Contacts
Once you’ve installed the IM software and completed your profile, you can begin searching for contacts. Your instant messenger program may only require that you input your e-mail address and it will do the searching for you, saving you valuable time of hunting through the people in your e-mail address book. You can also let friends and family know about your IM program.
Using an IM program can be fun and entertaining. Many now allow you to make phone calls and even chat through video. Nearly all IM programs have tutorials and help pages if you get stuck during installation. You may find more elaborate computer tips for using and customizing your instant messenger with the accompanied tutorials.
