Issues to Consider Before Buying a Netbook

Netbooks are great pieces of technology. Before Asus broke into the market with the EEE there were very few small laptops most of which were in the $1500+ price points making them far too expensive for most people. With this new technology does come a few problems that should be considered before purchasing a netbook.

The first is the screen size. For most applications when being run at full screen it's plenty of space to do what you need to do. Many are not more than 600 pixels tall but this is fine. Before you get a netbook make sure that the common applications that you expect to use on it will work on the limited height. Be careful because some applications, especially the ones that refuse to be resized, might be down below the visible space on the screen. If your applications resize height wise, they should be fine.

Although netbooks are cheap and many might not care, there will be times when the operating system needs to be reinstalled. Your hard drive might die or there will be issues with the operating system requiring a reinstall. It's important to have the ability to do this. For many the option might be to buy a USB CD-rom drive in order to reload. Other operating systems, especially Linux, can be reinstalled via a USB or SD card. Have a way of doing this when you buy your netbook.

Another issue is processing power. Don't expect over the top performance running applications that need quite a bit of resources to run properly.

If it's going to be portable, make sure it has some battery life. Many of the cheaper versions of netbooks on the market are not getting great battery life. Be sure to find ones that actually get a good 4+ hours in real world settings.

Netbooks are inexpensive and small enough that many people use them as a back up laptop. Some friedns of mine travel with a laptop and a netbook just in case they have problems. If giving an important presentation it's cheap insurance

Netbooks are good pieces of technology. There are some issues with the battery life, screen size, and reloading the operating system that will come up. Think of these solutions before your purchase.
