Utilising technology in education can be most beneficial as it engages students in new ways, enables students to easily connect with their peers and lecturers and increases productivity and level of achievement. All of this increases the likelihood of students achieving good results, now necessary in the competitive job industry. Universities are more and more utilising technology to help aid their student's progression, as a student and in the work place in the future. Yet, for most graduating students, there is still the feeling that Universalities are ill prepared for preparing graduates for the working world. It is thus perhaps not only important to utilise technology into the education process, but to then teach the necessary IT skills needed for the working world. Certification can certainly be a way of giving students practical skills that may otherwise not develop at University.
Already, the Open University has begun to offer certifications in IT for top certifying companies, such as Microsoft, enabling students to get hold of those important IT skills.
With the graduate job industry at an all time low, it's vital that we arm our graduates with the skills necessary to compete with other applicants. Part of this is perhaps offering to graduates ‘practical' certifications that employers find important, as well as encouraging them to get the necessary experience.
