One of Lexmark's more recent additions to its multi-function range aimed at students and for the home is the #X5650#. It will enable you to print, scan, make copies and send faxes.

In appearance the #X5650# is more functional than stylish. The control panel contains an LCD screen and a number of operating buttons. To the right is a multi-format card reader and USB port which allows you to print photos without turning on your PC.

Surprisingly, considering its low price, the #X5650# includes an auto-document feeder. This is situated on top of the printer and lets you copy and fax multi-page documents without having to load the pages individually. The capacity is limited to 25 pages but it will be a time saver.

The #X5650# is easy and quick to setup.

There are two different sizes of black and colour cartridges available for the #X5650#. The black is available as a 175 page version (No. 36) or 475 pages (36XL) and the colour as 150 pages (37) or 500 pages (37XL). The page estimates are definitely best case scenario but the XL's are better value over time. If you want to print high quality photos there is a separate no. 31 cartridge available for the #X5650#.

When it comes to printing the #X5650# wasn't bad. Black text was dark and well enough defined with only a little fuzziness at the edges of bold characters. When it came to business graphics the #X5650# was a little disappointing with pale print although black text was clear over coloured graphics and there was no sign of banding. It took the #X5650# about a minute to print six pages of ordinary text although it doubled that in draft mode.

The #X5650# printed fine, lively photos even with the ordinary colour cartridge. Closer inspection showed a lack of fine detail but from a distance prints looked good and most home users should find them more than adequate. Printing photos on the #X5650# was slow at nearly two minutes for a 5x7 print.

The #X5650#'s scanner is located on top of the machine and has a resolution of up to 600x1,00 ppi and it is possible to scan directly to a computer or a flash drive.

During testing the #X5650# proved to be surprisingly noisy when printing which could prove annoying during a long print run.

The Lexmark #X5650# is not a great machine but for the money it has a good set of features and does nothing badly.

For quite a few years the three leaders within the printer arena have really been Epson, Canon as well as Hewlett Packard (with a modicum of opposition from Xerox and Lexmark) although recently Brother have launched a concerted effort to fight the big boys over the range both in dedicated printers and all-in-one devices. Oki's C3450 takes up less space as compared to Lexmark's huge C500n, but it is nonetheless a big box manufactured from two-tone grey plastic material. The network setup wizard quickly found the printer. Additionally, it put in Oki's Status Monitor. This replicates the menu options you would come across on the LCD screen of a far more state-of-the-art printer, however we found it awkward. We favored the web interface, which offered a whole set of monitoring as well as configuration...
