Microsoft has been successful in creating much hype for its upcoming operating system, Windows 7. The new software will be officially launched on October 22nd and the devices bundle with the operating system, which has been already announced by different vendors, will be released in the market after the due date.
According to various analysts, unlike its predecessor Vista, which introduced a large number of new features, the new operating system is projected to be a more focused and augmented upgrade in the company’s Windows line. And it is expected to be fully compatible with applications and hardware of prior Microsoft’s versions.
The new software will have multi-touch support, a redesigned Windows Shell with a new taskbar, a home networking system called HomeGroup and many performance improvements that are discussed below:
Desktop
The new Windows 7 has various new features like Aero Shake, Aero Peek, and Snap that clear the open clutter or make the open windows translucent to check your desktop. The new operating system provides a choice of wallpapers, themes and slideshows. It has a new control panel interface that offers users to customize and switch between themes, as well as download more themes from the company's web site. Its improved taskbar shows thumbnail previews of web pages, documents or even running video.
HomeGroup
Now connect two or more PCs running Windows 7 with “HomeGroup”, and share files and printer in a home network or small offices. The new feature has “Share with” menu that provides a speedy way to share individual files between PCs. Also, with password-protection, HomeGroup puts users in total control.
Jump Lists
In Windows 7, users can check back the most recently used documents, pictures, songs, or websites by just right clicking the Word icon on the taskbar. You can also modify the Jump List according to usage, for example commands for composing new e-mail messages or playing music.
Windows XP Mode
To attract enterprises, Microsoft provides XP mode that runs a full-fledged Windows XP virtual environment using Microsoft’s Virtual PC. It requires an additional download, but users can run applications that are not compatible with the new operating system.
Snap
With Snap, users can resize open windows quickly by dragging them to the edges of your screen. With Aero technology, users will have more fun in reading, organizing and comparing windows.
Windows Live Essentials
It is a free software available from the Windows Live website, which provides e-mail, instant messaging, photo editing, movie maker, toolbar and blogging to the consumers.
Security
The new Windows 7 has Windows Action Center which covers both security and maintenance of the computer. Earlier, it was called as Windows Security Centre.
Windows Search
In Windows 7, user can find more things in more places and with much faster speed. Besides its own storage, the search also encompasses external hard drives, networked PCs, and libraries.
Missing Applications
In the new operating system, Microsoft has left few applications that were present in prior releases of Microsoft Windows. The applications include Windows Calendar, Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery. However, some of the applications will be offered separately as part of the free Windows Live Essentials suite.
The final RTM (Release to manufacturing) of Windows 7 had released on July 13th 2009 in both x86 and x64 versions. After that Microsoft released Windows 7 to OEMs (original equipment manufacturers and system builders) on July 24th and on August 16th, Windows 7 was made available to Microsoft Certified and Gold Certified Partners. The company has announced that the final version will be launched on October 22nd.
