Practical Pc Maintenance: Tips for Handling and Preventing Spyware, Viruses and Malware

The wired life would have been a lot easier if it wasn't for malware.  These nasty electronic bugs have become the bane of the computer industry, ruining what otherwise would have been an enjoyable trip to the world of computers and the Internet.  Keep your files and computer safe with these practical PC maintenance tips that will help prevent spyware, viruses and other malware from wrecking havoc in your computer.

Install antivirus and anti-spyware programs.
An antivirus program will help prevent, detect and clean your PC should a malicious program attempt to make an entry or infect your files.  An anti-spyware program works to prevent spyware from entering your system.  Anti-spyware programs are also capable of purging your PC of spyware in case an infection does occur.

Use a reliable firewall system.
A computer firewall is a program that helps prevent or minimize computer attacks.  They are especially helpful if you spend a lot of time surfing the Web.  Choose one firewall program that offers sturdy protection.  Running another one simultaneously could do more harm than good.

Install a registry cleaner.
A registry cleaner can eliminate malware hiding in your system, particularly in your Windows registry.  If these are not removed using an anti-spyware tool, running a registry cleaner can help.  It can also keep your system efficient, so purchasing one can be a good investment.

Turn off pop-up ads.
Pop-up ads used to be entertaining but now, they're just plain annoying.  Check your PC for a command you can click on to turn off these ads.  Some pop-ups contain malicious programs that could infect your PC.  You're least likely to click on them deliberately or accidentally if they don't appear.

Avoid downloading questionable files.
It's recommended that you download files only from trusted sources or websites.  Most spywares, viruses and malware are hidden in seemingly innocent files.  Once you've downloaded them or clicked on them on your PC, you'll activate them, essentially giving them permission to infect your system.

Turn off spam.
Learn to recognize spam and avoid opening them.  These e-mail messages are completely useless and quite dangerous.  You could also work with your Internet provider to eliminate these obnoxious messages to prevent them from releasing any malware, spyware or viruses in your PC.

Be vigilant about unknown files.
Should you receive files attached to e-mail messages or kept in disks or other portable storage systems, practice paranoia.  Don't trust files you don't know.  If you have no idea what they contain, you could open yourself up for an attack from spyware and viruses.  Ignore these files, delete them or if you have to, make sure to check them with a reliable antivirus or spyware program.
