The operating system must navigate its way through this maze of useless data to find the entries it needs to run the machine and programs. This results in slow balky operation of the computer. Freezing and the occasional crash are other symptoms of this problem. 
 
The solution to this is to remove the unwanted material from the registry. This can be done manually using the Regedit function which is installed in all windows PCs.
