The Samsung SCX-3205 is a mono laser printer with a pretty inexpensive asking price and generally outstanding all-round performance.

As a cost-effective mono printer well suited for churning out modest quantities of text and straightforward graphics, the Samsung ML-1915 has been riding high for upwards of a year currently. The SCX-3205, consequently, has quite an act to stay with.

A multifunction machine ( it includes scanning and copying also), the SCX-3205 delivers extra functionality. In a lot of respects, however, it employs the ML-1915 blueprint, having a modern black nicely curved design and style which would not look out of place in either a house or workplace.

The SCX-3205's £99 sale price is rather cheap, and you can certainly notice signs of cost cutting if you happen to look closer. The paper is fed in to the tray at the base of the unit, but there's no cover to guard the paper from flying dust particles. The tray itself is not particularly big - it stores just 150 sheets. The output tray has equally been lowered, with the unit holding just 50 sheets.

The modest paper handling features obviously indicate the SCX-3205 isn't really being directed at businesses having a requirement for big print jobs. Plus, in fact, there is no hint of Ethernet features, however some customers will be interested in paying an extra £65 for the SCX-3205W, which is sold with Wi-Fi connectivity.

In common with the ML-1915, the SCX-3205 features a small number of attractive extras, like the Print Screen button, which can automatically print off whatever's on the screen, and the Eco Print button, which squeezes two pages on to an individual page of paper. There are no auto-duplex amenities unfortunately, but of course the SCX-3205 comes with copying amenities and a very proficient scanning capability. The scanner is built into the top of the Samsung, and even though the lid is rather thin, it is very flexible, enabling users to slip in bulky items like books and manuals. The scanning quality is extremely good considering the price, with satisfactory duplication of fine detail.

The Samsung SCX-3205 comes very close to the maker's expressed print speed statistics, and we achieved 13.6 pages per minute in the Normal setting, only 2.4ppm short of the cited amount of 16ppm. On the Best setting, the rate lowered to a nevertheless outstanding 13ppm.

Both of the SCX-3205's text settings are good, with clear and well-defined characters. In the Normal mode, the end result is darker but also a bit heavier and the letters are not quite as properly formed as on Best mode. Nevertheless, the two create extremely capable text output. The SCX-3205 offers better variation of hues and actually made a fine job of a variety of photos which we instructed it to print. Decent graphics printing with a mono model is hardly ever going to be an essential point, however the SCX-3205 works okay in this region, and the speed of 11.5ppm with Normal mode (9.7ppm in Best) is extremely respectable.

Unexpectedly, it is not especially inexpensive to run with the Samsung SCX3205 printer cartridge.

In comparison to the Samsung ML-1915, the Samsung SCX-3205 provides marginally dissatisfactory paper handling features and also will set you back considerably more. Running costs typically are not quite as small as we might like, nevertheless it does supply superior print quality as well as (in Best mode) speed. Considering that you in addition get competent scanning and copying too, the SCX-3205 is definitely a good all-rounder.
