A wireless router is simply a router with a wireless user interface. A wireless router could either be a regular IP router with an 802.11 interface card and antenna added, or it could be a router specifically made for wireless use. Wireless routers are generally not as secure as hard wired routers. A majority of wireless routers also act as firewalls, switches, and provide Network Address Translation (NAT). An 802.11a or 802.11g wireless router provides maximum network speeds while the older 802.11b wireless router is slower delivering only 11Mbps.

It is vital to set up and configure the wireless router to work correctly with the RPI network. If this is not done, people may lose their network connection. If the wireless router is not secure, anyone who has a wireless card can access the Internet through your router.

Configuring most routers include changing the Device IP Address and the login username and password, setting the SSID(Service Set Identifier) to the desired RCS user ID, setting up the WEP key and making sure its authentication type is set to shared key, limiting the number of clients and setting up filters. Wireless Router Firewalls act as a barrier to keep potentially harmful information away from your computer. A firewall is a program or hardware device that filters information coming through the Internet connection into your private network or computer system. If an incoming packet of information is flagged and labeled as potentially harmful by the filters, it is not allowed to get through. A lot of wireless routers are available in the market today, both the 802.11g and the newer 802.11n from a variety of brands. All routers should work without any problem even if you mix and match, but for optimum connectivity, it is best to buy the hardware from the same vendor and product family.

The Aztech WL830RT4 802.11b/g 54Mbps Wireless Broadband Router is the perfect networking solution to share a high-speed cable or ADSL broadband surfing, huge files transferring or downloading, online gaming, video conferencing and streaming high quality multimedia materials.

A variety of wireless router devices supporting different standards, and specifications are available. The buyer of a router should ensure that the Internet service provider supports the router. Most broadband connections available today support ADSL or Cable standard. Most of the wireless routers do not support direct connectivity over co-axial cable. A number of wireless routers available today feature an in-built modem and connectivity for a telephone jack. Wireless routers like this can be directly connected to the telephone line without the need for a modem from your ISP.

The DG834G is one of the most popular ADSL Wireless Modem Routers, which lets you easily share your ADSL Internet connection with all the computers in your home, or small office - with or without wires. If it is your intention to share your broadband Internet connection and make a wireless network, there's good news for you: you no longer need to buy a router and a separate base station.

When you buy a wireless router it is not secure and its default configuration will allow unwanted users that are in the vicinity of your router to connect to the internet and “steal” your wireless router internet connection. They could also gain access to your PC and steal files and folders of data. Manufacturers leave the configuration “open” so that the user can easily set up the router and get it up and running quickly. However, there is a risk if the router is not secure.
