Updates DNS Records By Winodws 2003 DHCP Server

Posted: Feb 14, 2011 |
DHCP clients deployed on latest versions of Microsoft Windows operating system can update their DNS resource records by sending explicit requests to the DNS server each time they get a new IP address from a DHCP server on the network. However, DHCP clients on earlier versions of Microsoft Windows operating system cannot do this. To circumvent this issue, you can setup the DHCP service deployed on a Windows Server 2003 to updates DNS records for this type of DHCP client by following this procedure:

Step 1: Click on Start, click on Settings, click on Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, and then double-click on DHCP in order to open the DHCP MMC. The DHCP console is an administrative tool for managing DHCP servers.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on DHCP.

Step 3: Click on a valid DHCP server.

Step 4: In the Action menu, click on Properties.

Step 5: Click on the DNS tab.

Step 6: Activate the check box "Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below".
Step 7: At this step in the configuration, you may modify other parameters of DNS update. Moreover, click with the right button on this element, and then click on "What is it?" in order to obtain a description of an element of the dialog box "Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below".

DHCP clients installed on computers running Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating systems necessitate explicitly that the DHCP server updates only the pointer (PTR) records used in DNS server for the reverse lookup and resolution of the IP address of the client to its name. Keep in mind that these DHCP clients update their (A) resource records for themselves. In addition, the DHCP clients installed and running on earlier versions of Microsoft Windows operating system cannot send an explicit request for DNS dynamic update preference. In fact, the DHCP service updates the (A) and the Pointer resource records on behalf of its clients.
