What Do Your Cellphone Accessories Say About You?

Posted: Feb 03, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Pretty much everyone has a cellphone these days, and more and more are they using them as ways to express their individuality. There have been countless articles about "what you cellphone says about you," but what about what your cellphone accessories say about you? In terms of actual structure, most cellphones are pretty similar — you have your flip-phones, brick phones, Blackberries, Droids and iPhones — but when it comes down to it, they all come in basically the same colors and shapes.

So people have turned to cellphone accessories to express themselves. From cases to stickers to those little charms that lots of phones aren't even designed for anymore, people love using their cellphone accessories to say something about themselves. Take cases — there are hundreds, thousands, possibly millions of cellphone case designs out there, and what kind you get speaks to the kind of lifestyle you have. Body gloves, for example are made of a rubbery material called neoprene that fits tightly around the phone. They're designed to minimize the shock of a possible drop and to prevent scratches.

So what do they say about you? Mainly that you don't have time to do any unbuttoning or unzipping to get your phone — when you want to use it, you want to use it right then and there. Gloves rarely come in fun colors or designs, which is fine, because you're someone who values functionality over fashion. Then there are pouches, which are essentially miniature purses designed specifically for cellphones. They're usually open at one end, but sometimes zip or button, so you'll have go through that extra step body glove-users strive to avoid.

So what do they say about you? Well, it depends on what they look like exactly. Many fashion designers, if and when they decide to start creating cellphone cases, go for pouches, because it allows them to work with a variety of materials and patterns. Cases by designers like Louis Vuitton and Prada tend to be pretty chunky but stylish — which, if you're someone who cares a lot about your appearance, is just what you need.

However, many pouches are similar to body gloves — they're just thicker and don't fit snugly around the phone. These, which come in very basic colors, are often found snapped onto the waists of soccer moms who need their phones handy but able to withstand possible damage by small children, and grandpas who only grudgingly have a cellphone in the first place.

Finally, there are faceplates and skins. They come in an endless variety of colors and patterns, and often have drawings or photos on them. Faceplates are usually made of hard plastic and snap right over the front and back of your phone, while skins are generally made of very thin rubber that slides over the phone.

So what do they say about you? Mainly that you care more about the appearance of the phone than the phone itself, which is fine because you're pretty careful with your possessions — you just like the look of a nice design looking back at you when you use your phone.

So, now that you know what different types of cellphone cases say about their owners, what does yours say about you?
