FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, it is a secure way of exchanging files over the internet. We use FTP almost every time we use the internet. When you download an image, music, or video from the internet or play online games, you use FTP. When you download a file from the internet, you are actually transferring or moving the file from another computer to your computer. Because FTP makes it possible to transfer files back and forth and from one computer to another, FTP is very important for anyone who creates Web pages, whether amateur or professional.
A computer that is dedicated to receive FTP connection is an FTP server or FTP site. You can access an FTP site using a browser like Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. When you connect to an FTP site that allows anonymous login you will not be ask for a login and a password that is why most of the time you download something from the internet you are not even aware that you are actually connecting to an FTP server.
To make good FTP connections for uploading and downloading files you can use a dedicated FTP software program, referred to as an FTP 'Client'. With an FTP client, uploading and downloading files is very easy. With an FTP client it is also possible to resume downloads that were stopped or unsuccessful. You can install an FTP client in your computer. A popular FTP client is FileZilla, a free software. It is fast and reliable with many features and an intuitive user interface. It also supports FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).
