Why Do You Need An Ethernet Splitter?

Posted: Jan 17, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Ethernet splitter is used to plug in two or more computers to a single internet connection and all the computers connected thereby can access the net simultaneously.  It is also used to connect computers within a network which subsequently reduces wiring.  Ethernet splitters are inexpensive and are available in the market for a minimum of $20.00.  To connect an Ethernet splitter follow the simple steps explained below.

Plug in the Ethernet splitter into the router which provides the internet connection. Insert the cables of the devices you wish to connect to the network.  Mostly people who use a splitter will connect a printer too with the computer to reduce network collision. Check all the devices connected for network connectivity.

Though you could purchase them easily online, it is also interesting to make one on your own.  With a little patience and understanding you could design your own Ethernet splitter.  The components required are an Ethernet cable scrap, 2 pieces of RJ45 keystone jacks, adhesive, knife, crimp tool, electrical tape and a 110 punch down system.

It is highly crucial to use the right Ethernet splitter.  Crimp one end of the Ethernet cable and leave the other end as it is.  A set of instructions will come along with the RJ45 keystone jack and follow the same to open and place the Ethernet cables inside them to rip the network connection.  Place the white and orange wires in pin 1. The other end of the orange wire will go to Pin 2.  Pin 3 will take the white and green wires while the green cable goes into pin 6.

Now in the next keystone jack, put in the white and blue wire inside pin 1 and insert the blue cable on pin 2. Add the white and brown wire to pin 3 and the brown cable to pin 6. With an adhesive stick the jack by the sides and put them together.  Conceal all open wires and now your splitter is ready for use.

Ethernet splitters are a great way to reduce the amount of network cable you have in your house and save money. Splitters work by simply allowing two lanes of traffic to travel down an ethernet cable. Ethernet cables only use 4 out of the 8 wires they have when sending and receiving data. A splitter makes it possible for you to force two lanes of traffic down one cable.
