It is impossible to go and relax on a foreign holiday or be efficient on a business trip unless you have a trusty cell phone on hand. When you are away from home, the need to keep in touch with both your family and business contacts becomes even bigger.

You will certainly feel a lot better whilst you relax in the sun, or be more efficient during a business trip, if you are connected. You do need to conduct some research before you leave to see if your usual cell phone will work okay overseas. At this time you will need to consider whether you need to buy one of those international mobile phones.

Difference in technology all over the world, makes it important to understand that all cell phones will not automatically work in each and every country. Consider that there are two different networks -- CDMA and GSM. The well known cell phone carriers will utilize either one or the other of these networks.

For instance, within the USA, both AT&T and Verizon operate on different networks. The GSM network is the most dominant, extending to three quarters of the developed world, but the CDMA network, prevalent in the United States, only covers 20% of the rest of the world. International mobile phones may be your answer if traveling abroad.

You may have a GSM phone in the United States and you may also know that this network is dominant at your intended port of call. On the other hand, frequencies may pose an obstacle. In the United States cell phones operate on a different frequency to most of the rest of the world. Whilst your GSM phone may well work overseas, you might still have to replace its memory card.

International mobile phones are available to help you prepare for most eventualities. You can opt for a triple band phone which works on three frequencies -- 850 MHz, 900 MHz and 1900 MHz. This should be good within the United States, Europe and most major destinations. A step from that comprises of the quad band phone option which is a good option.

When buying international mobile phones, numerous options exist. For example, you can buy one direct from a manufacturer or you can find a willing dealer in your home city to locate the best option for you. Do a background check and research on the specialty suppliers who are available and take note of some of the emerging and cutting edge developments that can provide you with plenty more options and possibilities.

You always want to keep in touch when traveling overseas and international mobile phones can provide this lifeline for you. You have to admit that you certainly do not want to use the shockingly expensive hotel phones and constantly worry about the fact that you might not get an important message from your loved ones.

It can be quite disconcerting to navigate between the various network and frequency options, so the purchase of one of the international phones on the market may make sense for you.
