Common Building Problems

Posted: Jun 01, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

All builders and developers know that no two building jobs are the same, and most importantly, that there will almost always be unforeseen problems and delays to any new construction work. But while some of these problems can be easily rectified, some take longer to fix, and while this is unfortunate, it's also something that comes with the job. So if you've ever wondered why some building jobs always seem to be getting delayed, here are a few common building issues that you might not be aware of.

One problem that many builders come up against is actually a problem that many of us have had in our own working lives, and that is the problem of paperwork. It may a problem in your working life, but in construction not filling out the right paperwork, such as permits, will lead to delays that can take weeks, if not months to sort out. When any new building is proposed, nearby residents and businesses have to be informed of the plans for a new building or extension, then they are given the right to raise any complaints. While not many people do complain, if people do, this can also lead to long delays because any issues that people have with the proposed build will have to be worked out, even if it means changing the design of the building.

Once paperwork is sorted out, it's time for the build to begin, but sometimes the ground that is to be built on can be discovered to be structurally unsound, or merely unable to take the weight of a new building unaided. While this problem is thankfully rare, such issues have to be dealt with quickly, and one way to combat this is to pump concrete into the ground, this is particularly good at dealing with areas that may have such structural problems as disused mine shafts in them.

Sometimes it's not just new builds that are the problem, and conversions to older buildings can be very problematic, especially if a number of structural problems only come to light when the build is due to begin. Previously undiscovered issues can range wildly, from the discovery of mould and rot to more environmental issues, such as the discovery of a protected species of bat or other animal living in the building. While such environmental issues can be difficult to sort out, problems such as rot and mould can be eased with the use of a dehumidifier, which will remove excess humidity in the air, and while this won't get rid of the problem, it will at least stop it from getting any worse.
