Driveway repair that is Green and less expensive than replacement

Posted: Jan 01, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Concrete driveways, patio's, and sidewalks all have a tendency to drop or sag over time.  Several factors including, poor drainage and builder's shoddy back fill contribute to this problem but they all have the same result, which is the settling or removal of the soil beneath the concrete slab.

For many years the general public has been led to believe that the only solution to dropping concrete was to tear out the slab and pour a new one.  The replacement of a concrete driveway or patio is an expensive proposition.  Replacement is also a process that is very environmentally unfriendly.  Heavy equipment is needed to manufacture and transport the new concrete using vast amount of fuel and energy.  The old concrete slab that is torn out is transported to landfills using large amounts of energy  part of the process.  The old concrete takes up vast amounts space in landfills which causes them to fill up more quickly, thus wasting valuable real estate.

Mud-jacking is the "green" solution to concrete driveway, patio and sidewalk slab repair.  Mud-jacking is the process of pressure injecting top soil and grout underneath the slab.  The injection process fills existing voids underneath the slab and lifts the concrete back to original levels.  Typically 1.5 to 2 inch holes are drilled in the slab.  A nozzle connected to the  mud pump is inserted into the hole and distributes a mixture of soil and grout underneath the slab.  The number of holes drilled is dependent on the severity of the problem slab, but a good rule of thumb is about 1 hole per 20 square feet of concrete.

Mud-jacking typically costs 70% less than replacing a slab by pouring new concrete.  Mud-jacking is a green solution that also saves a homeowner a lot of green $.
