Depending on the size, on average I have found that with a good set of garage construction plans you can save yourself very nearly a third of the price of a ready made unit and the labour to put it up. Building your own garage should be an enjoyable experience not to mention the money you can save by doing so. Visit DIY Garage Building Plans for a great source of garage blueprints.
Choosing the right garage for the space is vital. Garages come in all manner of sizes and styles with different roofs and roof pitches. Here are my top tips for choosing the right blueprint for your project.
#1 Before you go about looking for a set of plans make sure you have doubled checked with your building authority as to what size you are permitted to build. Make sure you stick to their sizes as most can be very strict. Once you have the maximum dimensions allowed its time to site your garage. Do not to build too close to young trees and remember the seasonal building rule: winter vegetation looks a lot different to summer! I have seen garages overrun by summer foliage which can have a very detrimental effect on your structure.
#2 There are many ways of acquiring plans for your garage. An architect or draughtsman can draw your plans to the exact style and specification you require but will not be cheap. Plans can be found online, a few are free but most are not. A good set of plans will be a very detailed schematic showing everything from the ground up, joist sizes, exact roof pitches etc. I have downloaded plans in the past only to find out they are nothing more than a rough outline which is very frustrating. A good set of garage construction plans will also come with what is known as a "cutting list", which is the amount of lumbar you will need. Good plans can be found that don't have this, but having a ready made cutting list will make your life much easier.
