Mailbox Construction

Whenever a new house is built, there always comes a time when the left over bricks, timber, steel and other building materials are cleaned up around the house site and taken to the dump.

If you wish to save some money, ask the building site supervisor if it is okay to remove some of the building materials for use by yourself at a later date. They will more than likely say yes as this is reducing the amount of material they have to throw out to the dump.

I did this recently and saved heaps of money by building a couple of useful items around the house. One of these was a brick mailbox.

Just clean the bricks up with a stiff brush and store them away for use at a later date. Then when the house has been completed, you can use these bricks for your construction. Other items required would be a bag of pre-mix concrete for a slab, a bag of pre-mix mortar for the brickwork, a steel framed mailbox with lockable key unit, a few numbers for the front of the mailbox displaying the number of your house and some screws.

Build your mailbox by first creating a small concrete slab slightly larger than the footprint of the mailbox and waiting a few days for the slab to cure. Build the mailbox with the bricks aligned so that there is plenty of space for inserting the metal mailbox. Cover the top of the mailbox with a small layer of mortar. Clean the bricks down with a wet sponge and leave to dry for a few days.

Now you can add your numbers to the front of the mailbox!

This can be built days before the house is finished which is a good idea as you wish to receive mail at your new location as soon as possible.
