You might have seen a Pergola on a Deck or Patio. These are lovely outdoor structures that add a nice touch to any outdoor deck or patio. Pergolas define particular spaces. Many deck builders will use Pergolas to break up the deck into two areas. With a creative touch, the results achieved are spectacular.

Some of the more common materials used for pergolas are Southern Yellow Pine (pressure treated), western cedar, redwood or PVC (vinyl). Any pergola constructed of wood will require maintenance as opposed to PVC pergolas. The only drawback to puchasing a vinyl pergola is that it comes in a a kit to which you are limited. Some of the vinyl pergolas can only span 14' after that you have to add posts which will not always be acceptable. Unlimited versatility can be achieved by wood pergolas.

Balance and sizing are the crucial components to the construction of any pergola. Make sure you find an experienced Pergola builder who understands this. The Pergola tails will also play into the whole design process, depending if something more modern or Chinese, etc. is desired. The pergola posts or columns will also set the mood for the overall effect. Again, request pictures of past pergolas from your pergola builder. This will show you his style. Every pergola builder has a certain style that will vary from one pergola contractor to another pergola contract. It is important that you feel comfortable with your pergola contractor. He will have a huge amount of influence in the overall outcome. Different atmospheres can be created by using certain techniques, such as varying rafter heights. If the Pergola ceiling is lower, more of a cozy feel will be created but the higher ceilings will be more airy and open.

Keep in mind no matter who you choose as your Pergola contractor or Pergola builder one thing is for certain: you will give him a huge responsibility.

All the best to you on your next pergola. Good luck finding the best pergola builder is it worth the effort to make sure you find the right pergola contractor.
