The Science of Locksmithing

Posted: Dec 17, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Locksmithing is more than a service, it is a science. It is a science of how machines function. A lock, in its essence, is a simple machine composed of gears and latches. A key turns these gears and opens these latches. A lock is security defined; it secures places like rooms, homes, cabinets, safes and a plethora of other items and places. Locksmithing is the science of defeating the lock!

The oldest lock can be found as far back as the Egyptian Empire. Over 4,000 years old and made of clay, this pin tumbling lock is the oldest known form of any lock in history. Even then, the lock could be bested with a key.

A "smith" is any type of person whose trade is to forge or shape metal pieces into items. Locksmithing is the designing of locks.  Locksmiths in the past actually made the entire lock; hand cutting and shaping the metal with heat and forging it with a hammer and anvil. Today they are a dying breed, long forgotten in the age of mass production. However they still find themselves in great need and sought after by people who require more sophisticated creations such as private safes or vaults. These items cannot be mass produced.

Another important function performed by a locksmith is the changing of keys for locks. Locks may now be mass produced, and it is now far easier for a locksmith to change the tumbler within the lock and cut a new key for said lock rather than install a new piece of hardware. A trained locksmith can always beat a computerized security system.

Locksmiths usually offer their services commercially. Anyone can walk into a locksmith's and hire their services.

From working on storefronts for businesses, mobile vehicles, instrumental or investigational; locksmiths have many specialties in today's age. Some locksmiths have become security consultants for both big and small businesses, advising on what sort of security or locks to use to secure their prized possessions.

A good locksmith is certified and is always being tested to renew their trade with documentation from the locksmith association. Some locksmiths even work on existing door hardware, creating new door hardware for their locking systems. A locksmith has a general all around knowledge of how a door frame is put up so they understand the correlation between the lock and the door.

One must remember, no matter how well trained the locksmith and no matter how well versed they are in their trade, a lock will only delay a thief.  With the right tools, time and perseverance, any lock can be bested.

Skin is the protective layer that covers our body. It is much more than a simple barrier. In fact, scientists consider the skin to be an organ just like the heart, the liver or the stomach. This is because it has multiple functions that are far beyond the simple protection that people think about. In addition to offering us a safe enclosure for our tissues, the skin is important in thermal regulation, immune responses and even breathing to some extent.
