A very confusing decision to make when re-tiling is whether to tile over existing tile or remove the old tiles first. It should not be a problem tile over existing tile, and, but there are a few points to keep in mind while considering tiling over existing tiles.
Tiling on tiles is a bit of a bodge really, but if you must, just make sure they are very clean and dry before you start. They don't need scoring. Make sure you set up battens so that they don't slip and stay level. To tile straight over the top of old or existing tiles you will need to, use a suitable detergent or tile cleaner to remove all the dirt and grease etc on them, do this by horizontally and vertically scoring the tiles using a tile scriber, this will facilitate a bond between the old tiles and your new tiles.
If you are considering tiling straight over old tiles you need to keep in mind that this will make the new tiles at least the thickness of your old tiles proud. The reason to keep this in mind is it might cause you problems when it comes to tiling up to edges or door frames.
The majority of times when tiling it is much better to remove your existing tiles, this may make the project take long and more time consuming but your end tile results will be well worth the extra time and effort.
Another reason you would like to avoid tiling over tiles, other than money and time, is that if you have a high quality bathroom there is a risk of damaging it wile removing the tiles. This is a potential problem though avoidable.
