Best Bread Makers Review - Store Your Bread the Right Way

Posted: Jan 18, 2011 |

A question often asked when dealing with bread and baked goods is what is the proper means for storing the product so it stays fresh and safe for consumption? Without proper storage, your baked goods risk going stale faster or worse, being a host to food borne illness. We are going to discuss some methods to ensure you and your family can enjoy your bread in its freshest state for as long as possible.

We always recommend that any baked good including bread be tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This is very important as to protect it from direct outside air contact. We also suggest placing it in an airtight bag or an inverted bowl if necessary. The goal is to prevent exposure to the air which causes the bread to stale due to loss of moisture. Any exposed part of the bread will soon become stale and unappealing.

We have found that the freezer is the best place to store baked products that will not be consumed immediately. However, there is one small hurdle you need to clear with placing baked goods in the freezer: Freezer Burn. The general rule is that the quicker you freezer freezes the baked good, the less damage you will do. Freezers that are not self-defrosting keep foods longer and without as many problems (freezer burn, frost, etc.) than those that are not. That's because the food doesn't have to go through constant freezing and quick thawing cycles to prevent ice buildup in the freezer.

Despite popular opinion, placing your bread in the refrigerator actually speeds up the staling process. Science has concluded that the staling process takes place faster at the cooler temperature of a refrigerator than at room temperature. For long term storage, freeze the bread for up to 2 - 3 months. Either eat it or freeze it!

The rule of thumb is that if any baking recipe contains a perishable ingredient, it needs to be refrigerated. That includes cheesecakes, custard or cakes with filled or frosted with whipped cream and other perishable recipes. When serving perishable food, bacteria that cause food borne illness can contaminate such food if left out a room temperature. Scientists have found that after 2 hours at room temperature, bacteria can multiply on foods to high enough levels to cause illness. Everyone should avoid perishable foods, which are not kept either cold (or hot). Cold foods are safe if dept cold (below 40 degrees F) nestled in bowls of ice or replaced often from the refrigerator. (Hot foods kept hot (above 140 degrees F) in a chafing dish, slow cooker, or warming trays.)

There you have it guys. Ensure you store your bread properly and you will be able to enjoy fresh great tasting bread much longer. Remember the rule: Eat it or freeze it! No refrigerator unless it has perishable ingredients.

When setting up your camp site, the most important aspect to consider is location. Heavily wooded areas can lead to uninvited woodland guests, while land near ponds can open the door to mosquito infestation. But the most important feature of a campsite, which if neglected can cause the biggest safety risk, is the area's likelihood to experience flash floods.
