Different Kinds of Frozen TV Dinners

Posted: May 23, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Say "TV dinner" and it brings to mind aluminum foil trays holding portions of meat, potatoes and vegetables, each nestled in its own little compartment. The food may or may not have been tasty but it was filling, fast and didn't strain the household budget. Today there are a myriad of choices in prepared frozen dinners.

Classic
Fried chicken, peas and carrots, mashed potatoes with a mystery dessert square in the middle, brings back memories of dinners long ago, right after television went to color. Other classics include turkey slices over stuffing and gravy with string beans and apple slices or meat loaf, brown sauce, corn and potato slices. The dinners may not have been gourmet fare by any means, but they were filling and fast, considering microwaves weren't a household appliance.

Ethnic
Cruising the frozen food section of your grocery takes you around the world as far as frozen dinners go. You'll find Italian dinners, East Indian, Chinese and Mexican. These dinners are produced to satisfy the taste of the masses so don't expect to find authentic cuisines. Put together your own TV dinner by selecting, say individually packaged egg rolls, refried rice, sweet and sour pork.

Pasta Based
Macaroni and cheese has gone upscale with lobster pasta and three cheeses, chicken in Alfredo sauce and vegetarian lasagna. Pasta is inexpensive and filling. The flavors of the meat, sauce and vegetables are stretched by the pasta. Just because pasta is the main ingredient don't expect them to be cheaper than other TV dinners. Most pasta TV dinners include a vegetable in the pasta mix.

Homemade
This is one TV dinner that you'll know exactly what went into it. Have flat food storage containers on hand. There are kinds made especially for freezing dinners with depressions for the meat, potatoes and vegetables. Instead of putting leftovers in the refrigerator where they turn into alien life forms, put them into a container. Label with the contents and freeze. They'll be on hand when you need a fast dinner.

Warning
Processed foods depend on salt and fat for flavor. TV dinners are convenient, they may taste good but they aren't necessarily good for you. Check the label to see if the nutritional value of the dinner fits with your eating habits. Reduced fat doesn't mean low fat. No sugar added doesn't mean low calorie. No trans fat doesn't mean no fat.
