Healthy Cookie Myths-Busted

Posted: Feb 14, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

MYTH: all healthy cookie recipes taste awful.

BUSTED: Many people mistakenly believe that whole grain cookies are drier and have less taste compared to non-whole grain. With the right healthy cookie recipe, the taste difference is very minimal. After trying a healthy cookie, many find they actually prefer the whole grain taste. Wheat-free and even non-gluten cookies have come a long way from the days when they were dry and crumbly; there are many good brands that taste as good as or better than their sugary counterparts.

MYTH: Kids won't eat cookies made from healthy cookie recipes.

BUSTED: It's true that some kids may not like the texture or taste of SOME healthy cookies. If your child is used to a lot of sugary processed snacks, you may need to gradually modify the recipe and use half white sugar and half wholesome sweeteners for awhile. Skipping the refined white sugar and replacing it with healthier alternatives allows you to taste other flavors in the cookie besides just sugar. Many healthy cookies use honey, evaporated cane juice, maple syrup, agave, molasses, and fruit as white sugar alternatives to create a surprisingly sweet taste. These ingredients are generally used in smaller quantities so the sweet taste isn't overpowering.

MYTH: All labels stating their cookies are healthy are fake.

BUSTED: It's important to learn how to read the label. If it's made with ingredients you can't pronounce and/or contains artificial sweeteners, it most likely is not very healthy. Some companies will try to give the impression that their product or recipe makes for a healthy cookie when in fact they use the same saturated fat, sugar and other less wholesome ingredients found in regular cookies. Don't give up! There are many brands that do sell healthy cookies and there are healthy cookie recipes. The trick is reading the labels on packaging and checking the ingredients in the recipe; don't go off of what sounds or appears healthy. Look out for the amount and type of sugar added. Choose healthier sweetener options like the ones discussed earlier. The absence of trans-fats and less saturated fats are also good signs.

Now that we've busted a few of myths surrounding healthy cookies you can be a smarter consumer at the store and a savvier baker next time. Try using a healthy cookie recipe today.
