Holiday Cooking Preparations - How To Make It Less Stressful

Most of us anticipate the holidays with mixed emotions. Though it is a wonderful time to share with friends and family, it is also a period where life is highly charged as we are driven to distraction by the endless preparations and anxiety over gift shopping. There are so many events to attend, dinners to prepare, and unlimited shopping trips to cater for all those last minute eventualities. During such a frenetic time it is difficult to keep a cool, calm approach even for the most organised. In the interests of your sanity, it might be a good idea to read through some of the advice offered below. You may find it gives you a differen approach to your festive preparations and allows you more time to actually enjoy the holiday.

The first essential piece of advice is to adopt an uncomplicated attitude to all of your holiday preparations. That is to say, all you preparations for parties, dinners, events planned or unplanned should be carried out with the least cost to you either in actual expense, time and stress. In essence your motto should be 'simplicity'.

Keeping in mind the principles of simplicity, apply these to whatever tasks you have to fullfill. By sticking to one task at a time will ensure that you not have many semi completed projects on the go at the same time, and thus running the risk of completing none of them. Make a list of everything you need to achieve, and allocate a specific period of time for each task, whether it is gift shopping, gift wrapping, cooking or cleaning. When each job is completed it can be deleted from your list and in that way you can avoid things being forgotten.

Shopping is one activity that is very time consuming and most of us tend to spend more time making countless trips to and from shopping centres than is really necessary. Whatever you are shopping for whether it is food or gifts it makes sense to take some time before you make your journey to list the items that you want to buy. If this is done in advance you are more likely to make better choices and could possible be more economical as you are then less likely to overspend on last minute purchases.

Grocery shopping for the holidays is a mammoth event. But once you have returned home the groceries need to be stored, and refrigerated. Make this chore easier by ensuring there is space available in your kitchen, pantry and refrigerator before you have started your shopping. It is obviously important that everything is well chilled and stored appropriately, therefore, a contingency plan should be made for those items that will not fit in your storage areas or refrigerator.

Expect the unexpected. It is an unwrittten law that something somewhere will not go according to plan during the holiday season, especially when preparing food for your guests. Disaster may strike whilst you are preparing an intricate recipe and you may find that you don't have enough to go around! The solution to this is to be prepared to have a quick and easy, tried and trusted recipe in mind to save the day.

Your day will be thrown into chaos if you find that the meat or poultry you are planning to cook for the holiday dinner is not properly defrosted. You may have already estimated a length of time for cooking, but it is a good idea to have an extra hour leeway so that if the meat has not proplerly thawed out or needs a longer cooking time then you will be thoroughly prepared and no one will be disappointed.

Finally, once you have finished using a pot or untensil try to make sure you wash it and put it away. Keep your surfaces clear and you will be rewarded at the end of your meal when you have less to do and the task of cleaning up has been halved!

By following the above advice you will find that at least you will be in a more relaxed frame of mind to enjoy all that the holiday has to offer.
