Spices Enhance a Meal

Cooking is an art. All foods you cook or eat, are enhanced when adding spices to the pot.

Not all spices give the identical taste for the same foods.

Ground Cinnamon. The flavor of this spice enhances the taste and aroma of sliced apples cooking in a pot. Applesauce, eaten warm or cold, is a delicious desert. Change the taste of plain French toast by sprinkling ground cinnamon on top of the bread.

Bay Leaves. These small crunchy leaves are best used in cooking a roast or added to a pot of soup. Use liberally. Just drop one or two into boiling pot of soup, turn down the flame and allow to cook. Crush one or two in your hands and add to any salad dressing or the salad itself.

Cloves - They give a baked ham the flavor and taste. Push them into the uncooked ham itself and bake. They enhance the taste of applesauce; relish and delicious plum pudding especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Salt - Adds flavor to anything you eat; cold or hot. Used in excess is not suggested. It can make anything it is used on taste too salty.

Ground Black Pepper - Like salt, it is used sparingly to add flavor to almost everything you eat, cook or broil.

Garlic Powder - Used as a seasoning and sprinkled lightly or heavily according to taste. Use sparingly on ribs, beef and chicken. Garlic Powder is usually already on the table of Italian Restaurants. At home, toast a slice of Italian Bread. Spread with butter and sprinkle garlic powder on top. Heat in the oven until toasted. It is delicious with a meal or as a snack.

Chives - These are small onions with a different look and taste. Grow them in your garden at home. Slice as needed when making soups or salads. They can be used in anything you eat. Just slice and serve as is.

Ginger - If you ever tasted a Gingerbread House, you will recognize the taste of ginger. Ginger can be added to any vegetable, meat, chicken dish or baked cookies. Hint: Buy a box of Ginger Snaps in the cookies department of your supermarket. Add about 6 whole cookies into a pot of meat soup or stew. Bring to a boil and cook. The cookies melt, thickens the soup and adds a slight hint of ginger flavor. It is delicious.
