To use or not to use kitchen appliances

Posted: Jul 30, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Electricity represents the symbol of the technological era and the end of the heavy industry one. During the 8th century, machinery started to replace man, and began to reduce physical labour. This phenomenon was happening only in developed countries, among it was Great Britain. Until the first half of the 20th century, 95% of electronics was used only in machines and equipment found in industry. In the second half of the 20th century, when the Second World War was over, people started equipping their home with TVs, washing-machines, refrigerators and other such 'luxuries'.

If in the ‘50s very few had a TV, in the last years of the 20th century most homes were dominated by all kind of appliances. The kitchen of the 21st century is more technological then ever, being the speed era, when everything must be done as fast as possible. For almost any kind of task there is now an electric or electronic kitchen appliance like kitchen mixers, electric and microwave ovens, dish-washing machines, beverage dispensers, electric cutters and slicers etc.

The question now is: should everything in the kitchen be done by robot like machines? I'm not talking here about restaurant kitchens where everything must be done fast and perfect; I'm referring to home kitchens where one cooks for family and loved ones.

Technological kitchen vs. traditional kitchen

Pro appliances

- not everyone is a master chef to get everything done fast, perfect and tasty

- specialised help: some recipes need appliances

- time saving: not everyone has the time to stay all day in the kitchen cooking

- esthetic aspects: some types of food look better when using appliances

Cons

- lose the fun of cooking and getting all dirty

- traditional recipes are better done in the old fashion way

- those that learned cooking from grannies and mums relive good memories by putting their hands to the task, not the electric socket

- the food tastes better cooked in old pans and with older kitchen tools

These lists can go on longer, nevertheless it all depends on the individual. For example, I'm not a very good cook, so I welcome all the help I can get, but at the same time I have a feeling of satisfaction when the meal I cooked is really appreciated and tastes insanely good.

It's up to each and everyone to choose if and when they want to upgrade their kitchen with all the appliances they can put their hands on, as long as they know how to use it…
