It goes without saying that being a freelance writer is a fun thing.

Really fun!

And there is still another good news for you:

Calendar year 2012 is expected to be an even better era for the writers, and especially for the freelance writers.

Many larger companies will be outsourcing their writing jobs due to recession.

Modern writers have more resources, readily and cheaply available to them as compared to any writer from the past - Isn't it a blessing?

Obviously, it is a godsend.

But beware:

the common issues that all the freelance writers face will still keep haunting us. And they are countless.

After some extensive research, some questionnaires and with the help of my personal experience, I have compiled a list of top 5 challenges faced by freelance writers along with their easy solutions.

Here is the list:

1. Finding good clients  is a tough and boring job

Most clients are useless. They want keyword articles for $5 to $15.

You have to find good clients as a writer, who pay well worth your time.

Free classified sites like LinkedIn, craigslist, certain free job boards, freelance bidding sites are some places to try your luck.

But most good paying gigs are never advertised. They are bestowed through connection of by word of mouth. It's in your best interest to increase your circle of acquaintances.

2. Time management

When you have several clients, time management can be a share pain in the neck.

Only accept projects within your domain. Learn how to write fast, improve your typing speed, and learn where you find the best info e.g. Amazon, Wikipedia etc. – never edit while you are typing. Leave it for afterwards.

 3. Health problems

Working your heart out can damage your physical as well as mental health.

Make a habit of regular exercise, better yet join a gym, keep an eye on your eating habits, and don't overwork.

4. Risk of getting conned

Some clients will hire you, get their job done, publish your content and will never pay you.

It has happened to me twice.

Always take at least 50% of the amount in advance. If you are dealing with a repeat customer, you can settle for 30%.

5. Not earning enough money

You work for money.

If at the end of the day, you are unable to pay your utility bills with you freelance earing, you really need to think what's going wrong.

The simplest solution is to increase your price.

You may increase your price for every new client of project. But always grow your rates gradually, a 100% surge will drive your client crazy. 

As you progress, you gain experience and you deserve more. Remember, your clients come back to you only because of your good work, not your low price.

Hopefully, these tips can reduce most of your obstacles this year. But there may be other issues that are specific to your particular situation.

And in the end, my best advice is not to lose hope no matter how worse the situation is. Because where there is will, there is a way.
