Five ideas to boost your business as a website copywriter

Posted: Jun 02, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Being a website copywriter can be highly rewarding, both financially and in terms of job satisfaction. You get to work with lots of interesting clients and write about all kinds of different things on a daily basis.

Except when the work dries up. Then, it can seem pretty miserable being a website copywriter, and you begin to wonder if you might be better returning to the regular pay cheque and reliable drudgery of your old job. The alternative is pulling your socks up and actively hunting down copywriting work and clients. Here we suggest five ideas to put the money, and the fun, back into being a website copywriter. These five tips are also a great roadmap for those looking for exceptional copywriting services too…

1. Market yourself in fresh ways

The Internet has provided more ways for a freelance website copywriter to market themselves than ever before. Having a website is a great start, but why not cover as many bases as possible? Social media tools such as Twitter, Linked In and even Facebook can provide valuable extra exposure for your business. If you're looking for a copywriter, those that understand these platforms and utilise them for their own advertising will also know how to incorporate them into your marketing strategy too.

2. Play to your strengths

If you've been marketing your copywriting services but aren't seeing results then it's worth taking a little time out to consider if you're really playing to your own strengths and expertise. People are more likely to hire you if you have specialist knowledge relevant to their business. Take a pen and paper and jot down everything and anything you have substantial knowledge or experience in, even if it sounds silly. Then actively search for someone who might need your expertise. Listing these specialist areas on your website also gives potential customers a clear idea of what you're good at, and whether your skills set matches their requirements.

3. Try something new

When the going gets tough you can either mope about and curse your luck, or you can seize the opportunity to do something new. If you're regular sources of work have dried up, then take a look at some new areas you could break into with the experience you have. For instance, if you've got experience in writing content for commercial websites, why not give email marketing a shot? Or if you've always focused on writing for a particular type of business, how about utilising your skills in another, possibly more profitable area? Again, this can expand your repertoire, and give potential customers even more reasons to hire you.

4. Try something old

Look back through your old invoices or computer files. Chances are you'll be reminded of an old client with whom you once had a good working relationship, but for some reason you've just ‘drifted apart'. Perhaps their business hit a rocky patch, or their marketing budget was reduced. But whatever the reasons why the work dried up, it might not be the case now. Rather than speculate, get in touch with them and see if they have any current need for a website copywriter they already know and trust.

5. Polish your own website

As a website copywriter there's absolutely no excuse to have a website that's messy, out of date and a real turn-off for potential customers. You need to practice what you preach, so your site has to be sleek, attractive and engaging. Down time in between projects presents a great opportunity to perfect your own website. Have you spent as much time and effort on it as you would have if you were getting paid for it? What have you learned from working on the websites of others which you can use to enhance your own? For potential clients, your website is your ‘shop window'. Showcase your talent to its best advantage and prove to the world that you're truly ‘open for business'.
