Review: How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites by Nick Usborne (for American Writers & Artists Inc)

Posted: Jan 07, 2010 |Comments: 0 | Views: 218 |

Nick Usborne is a highly capable writer and master online marketer. Naturally, I had great expectations for How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites.

In particular, I was keen to discover the secret to generating a regular and substantial online income from writing about anything. I already knew a thing or two about copywriting, but I figured this would open my eyes to the wonders of writing for the web.

At $397 for a 348-page e-book, it had better be good.

I was surprised how soon disappointment set in. I’m loathe to criticize Nick Usborne as he’s a man who knows his craft. But in How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites, he is patronizing and repetitive.

That said, the principle is sound enough. Find a niche, do your research, use keyword tools and competitor analysis to develop your content. Start with your main topic, break it down into sub-topics, then break these down further still. Get writing. And keep at it.

Before you know it, you’ll have a hundred pages of keyword-rich content. Open your site up to Adsense (taking Google ads on your pages) and sign up for a few affiliate programs that sell relevant products. Then watch the cash roll in. Keep adding content to your site and build your Google ranking as well as your bank balance. Simple.

Trouble is, Nick Usborne’s ‘program’ doesn’t tell you anything you can’t find out for free if you know where to look. Worse, there’s plenty he doesn’t tell you. Like how to go about the actual writing.

Nick’s ‘niche’ = my fast-fading belief

Finding your niche, Nick tells us, is the key. He then takes us through some neat methods for exploring your candidate topics using Google’s keyword tool. (Neat, but not exclusive.)

He shows us how he built his own money-making website: Coffee Detective. Credit to him on this – he admits the site is no beauty, but it’s brimming with content and comes out near the top on Google for “making coffee”.

But when Nick tried to convince me that making coffee is a niche, it wasn’t Arabica beans I smelt. My belief in How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites was fading fast.

Excellent list of resources, but no help building your website

Another let-down is that Nick Usborne offers little practical guidance in how to turn your writing into a website.

He does, however, mention a number of excellent resources, including: semrush, wordtracker, keywordspy and keyworddiscovery. All valuable tools for the online copywriter. But easy enough to find out about elsewhere.

You can track down all the information you need at no cost

As I discovered, after returning my copy of How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites for a refund, all this and more is there for the taking in Make a Fortune promoting Other People’s Stuff Online (How Affiliate Marketing Can Make You Rich) by Rosalind Gardner.

Then again, if you’re willing to spend a bit of time doing your own research, you can track down all the information you need at no cost at all. The challenge is knowing how to sort the chaff from the wheat.

The good news: there's a 365-day money-back guarantee

To be fair to AWAI, How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites does come with a 365-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not making a decent income (and enjoying it too!) they’ll give you your money back. Excluding shipping.

So I got my money back. For aspiring internet marketers, there are far better ways to spend it.
