Descriptive statistics mainly describe the features in data collection but in quantitative terms. Descriptive statistics are distinguished from inferential statistics in the sense that descriptive statistics aims at summarizing quantitatively a set of data instead of just describing inferential statistics (University of Leicester, 2009).  Mostly used descriptive statistics include measure of central tendency, measure of dispersion, measure of association, and many others (Bartz, 1986).

The design of this study set forth the stage for use of quantitative study.  The study used randomized controlled trial with the participants randomly assigned to randomization process.  There were three main quantitative variables which were used in this study included

  • T-test
  • Fischer test
  • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

In this study, descriptive statistics were used to use to create a close relationship between different variables and hence answer research questions and the hypothesis of the study (Welknowitz, 2002). In this study, the above quantitative variables were all assigned as mean and standard deviation.  They were also expressed by absolute frequency.

As has been highlighted earlier, descriptive statistics are most used to describe or enhance working with inferential statistics.  In this case, descriptive statistics mean and standard deviation were assigned to the above inferential statistics. Therefore descriptive statistics enabled the researchers to answer the hypothesis of the study.

Descriptive statistics were used to help the researcher to describe the t-test (Thorne, 2008).  In the study, student t-test was used for all non-related samples. T-test was used to compare different quantitative variables of the baseline clinical characteristics.  In this case, assigning of a descriptive statistics to t-test enabled the researcher to answer the research hypothesis.

Descriptive statistics was also used to describe the Fischer test. Fischer test was used to compare the qualitative variables. The main variables compared were baseline clinical characteristics in both research groups.  This means that descriptive statistics like mean and standard deviation helped this study to carry out Fischer test on the collected data. Without descriptive statistics, this could not have happened.

The most important test for this study was the repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA).   Together with Bonferroni test, measure analysis of variance was used to compare the different behaviors of the data groups over a specified period of time.  The two tests were widely used in this study to study and related behavior of the participants which was one of the important variables in this study. A P-value which was less that 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant in the study. Ultimately, through giving these variable descriptive statistics, researchers were in a position to prove the hypothesis of the study.

Descriptive statistics assist in describing inferential statistics.  Descriptive statistics in this study have been given to different variables which were used in analyzing the data. Through ANOVA, the study was able to prove the research hypothesis (National Atlas.gov, 2009).  Therefore descriptive statistics were important in this study as it helped the researchers to analyze various data groups and hence the research hypothesis.
