What Rates to Take on Translations Jobs

There’s not always easy to find out what type of rates to take on translation jobs. It depends on what the agency/person want to pay, what the source language is, target language and how many words/how much work.

I am currently translating and was very unsure what to charge my clients for each project. My first translating job was a large project with 100 big articles - we came to an agreement that they would pay me $400 for all articles translated. I was ok with this and translated them all.

Next time I translated, I charged my client (a new one) $0,09 per word from the source language and have continued to do so after this. Looking back, I could actually have made $2250 approximately or more from the 100 articles I translated if I was aware of the going rates.

What I would recommend is to see what other people usually charge and take approximately the same or maybe a little under to be competative. As I read for a while ago, the normal rate (per word) is $0,07 and over. Many takes as much as $0,20 per word actually and still get a lot of work.

This is to be said, I usually take my rates down a notch when I get large projects - 30 000 words or over - $0,08 per word.

For hourly and daily rates I am not familiar, but I guess this depends on how many words per hour you can translate and then do the math. Visit JUTS for more info.
