Based in La Crosse, Wis., Gundersen Lutheran is a complete healthcare network including one of the nation's largest group medical practices offering regional community clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, home care, behavioral health services, eye care clinics, pharmacies, and air and ground ambulances. Gundersen Lutheran employs more than 5,500 employees in southeast Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin, and northeast Iowa.

As a federally regulated organization, Gundersen Lutheran must meet the training requirements associated with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). No less important to Gundersen Lutheran is its desire to tailor training to fit doctors and nurses' hectic schedules.

Healthcare Network Taps SumTotal Systems to Prepare for HIPAA. Use of Software Gives Doctors and Nurses More Time to Heal Patients.

"Not only did SumTotal offer us everything we wanted, but we were confident they would be in business for a long time to come, which wasn't how we felt about all of the other firms we met," says Jay Fernandez, Manager of HRIS, Gundersen Lutheran.

The LMS cut training time at the healthcare network by 50 percent, which allowed each doctor and nurse throughout the network to spend an additional 14 hours per year with patients. By simply delivering Occupational Safety and Health Administration training online, Gundersen Lutheran has saved $700,000. That savings has contributed to 100 percent return on the healthcare networks' investment within 12 months of launching the LMS. And with SumTotal's help, Gundersen Lutheran got its LMS running for $20,000 under budget. The LMS was the platform for managing attendance for 1,200 employees enrolled in a class on a new patient admissions process. The new process resulted in a revenue increase across the healthcare network. And from Fernandez's vantage point, the LMS served as "a strategic tool that streamlined the training for implementing the new admissions process."

Does Someone with Bi-polar disease know what they are doing when they are stealing?
By: bening7 | 03-09-2008
I have a family member who has been diagnosed with depression, bi-polar disease, and borderline personality by three different doctors and at two different medical centers.  So there is no clear cut, definitive diagnosis.  She's 40, lives with her mother, and can't seem to hold a job.  The biggest problem is her stealing. She has taken nearly $150,000 over the past five years from family and friends--some of whom wanted to press charges but her mother got involved and begged them not to and paid them back herself. Now her mom is retired and living on a good, not great, fixed income, supporting both her daughter and herself--and she just found out the daughter had taken one of her credit cards and charged $25,000 in two months.  The daughter claims she doesn't know what she bought and hid the statements so the mother doesn't even know where the charges were made.  My question is this: Is it possible--with depression, bipolar and/or borderline personality--the daughter truly doesn't know what she did and should therefore not be held accountable?  And where does it end?  At this rate, the mother will have nothing left soon but she doesn't see any options as she doesn't want to send her daughter to jail and tells all of us there are no good mental health inpatient programs which accept Medicaid patients.  If anyone knows anything about this or has experienced something similar, your help would be greatly appreciated!
