Madelinetosh Yarns
Madelinetosh is one of the newest yarns companies that we have added to our range. It is one that very few people will have heard of but it is a fantastic company. We thought that we would put some information together about the company like for example who is Madelinetosh and also some information about the company itself.
Who is Madelinetosh?
Well Madelinetosh was actually the grandmother of the founder of the company. She was in fact born Lillian Madeline Atkins. Her father was a hopeful tenant farmer and her mother a fair-skinned aesthete. She was born in 1900 in a small town in Virginia called Moonlight. When Lillian was 12 years old she walked to the county seat and filled out a form to change her name to Madeline Tosh. When she was asked why she changed her she claimed that her school teachers surname was better suited to her than the simple Lillian.
When Madeline reached 19 she met a tugboat captain and married him to spite her father for an undelivered gift four months earlier. They had 9 children and raised 6 to adulthood. When all six children were grown up Madeline left her husband and began working in a department store packing and unpacking crystal lamps. Later in her life she moved to Claremont, bought and oak loom and wove linen and handspun fabrics for pocket money. Madeline Tosh never travelled outside the Virginia area and died in 1984.
About the Company?
We were very excited when we came across the Madelinetosh yarns, mainly due to the high quality and choice of colour. The company was actually formed in 2006 and the aim of creating an artist's palette of colours in hand knitting yarns. Enthused with a love of painting and influenced by the rich history of art in textiles, madelinetosh sought to create a colour palette guided by the subtle nuances and layered depth of colours found in the natural world.
The company selects high quality fibres that and soft to touch and are completely natural. They dye the yarns by hand and build up the colour by applying several coats of colour glaze. Now there are over one hundred colours in their palette and there is literally something for everyone.
Each and every order is created by hand and so what you purchase may be different each time, even if selecting the same colour. This gives you the chance to create a truly unique garment with a fantastic yarn. If you are looking for something of the highest quality then Madelinetosh is definitely the yarn to go for.
