Tips For Making Your Own Jedi Costume
Most people like the convenience of just being able to go to an online or offline store and buy the costume they want. The idea of putting together the various bits and pieces to create their own version of a costume just isn't their thing. That's fair enough - each to their own. Some people have a very strong creative streak (my younger brother) and some people lack that creative urge (me).
For others though the urge to create their own costumes is too strong and Star Wars fans are up there with Trekkies and Lords of the Rings fans in how far they'll go to creat their perfect Jedi or Sith costume. Now this is usually because you as a Star Wars fan keeps company with other SW fans and let's face facts - it's always a competition for who has the best costume.
There's another reason for making your own Jedi costume though. What's that now? For some weird reason not every Jedi costume can be bought online. And there are some versions of character outfits that are just missing altogether. For example you'll have no problem buying a Jedi robe or a basic Luke Skywalker New Hope costume but you'll never be able to find the type of black costume that Luke wore in Return of the Jedi. Even though there's huge demand for these companies just don't produce them - full stop.
It's not just Luke either. Mace Windu was excluded as well as a pile of other Jedi characters - you'll have no choice but to create your own Jedi costume if you want to dress up as any of these Jedi.
The good news is that creating a Jedi costume isn't all that tough - there are some basic components you can play around with to get the look you want.
First off you're going to need a martial arts gi (uniform) top. I'd recommend a Judo top in plain white just because they're a bit longer than other types and the white color will give you a good foundation to work from if you want to dye it. Next you're going to need a pair of scrub pants - these can be found in a huge number of colors so pick the one that's going to match your final costume plans. Why not use Judo pants? They're too baggy and have reinforced panels at the knees - they'd just look totally wrong.
The next item is a belt to hang your pouched and lightsaber from. Any of the Jedi costumes I can think of use a brown or black belt. The only real requirement is that the belt should be pretty wide - a narrow strip of leather just won't look as convincing. The pouches are really just for effect (well okay you could actually keep stuff in them) so anything like a cheap camera pouch and a few other small pouches will give the result you're looking for.
Last but not least you need to cover your feet. You could use boot toppers from any costume store - pirate style boot toppers might go well. Otherwise you're going to have to go and buy leather boots - just make sure these boots aren't too tight around your calf - look at any picture of Mace Windu to get an idea of what I mean.
This is just a really rough guide to creating your own Jedi costume but you can see with a little bit of thought and experimentation you can get some really impressive results.
