I've done it, and although it was challenging at times most of it was a lot simpler than I feared. I now run a blog helping people like you to grab their own slice of freedom. Visit Crafts Business Online for loads of free advice and a copy of the highly acclaimed ebook "Craft Success Online". Of course you could just keep going to work every Monday...
Many people look at an online crafts business as their escape from the rat-race, the chance to ditch the tedious nine to five (or often eight to six). It's a way of going from hobby crafter to full-time crafts person. The opportunity to give yourself and your family more freedom and, just as importantly, more security.
It can be all those things, and there has probably never been a better time to make the move. I'm not suggesting anything as radical as handing in your resignation next Monday, but you can start your craft business today and the internet gives you the chance to build it while keeping your existing job. At some point in the future, when your online craft income matches or exceed that from your "day job", you can decide which way you want to go.
It's a way of building a craft business, in fact any business, that quite simply didn't exist just a few short years ago. Now that it does, we would be foolish not to take advantage of it!
It doesn't require huge investment either. You're already spending out to create your craft items so there's no extra requirement there. To take your craft business online you obviously need some kind of internet presence - I would suggest a blog - but really you're talking pizza money. A lot of people spend more on take out food each month than it takes to run a professional craft blog. If that's too big a stretch for you, you're probably going to be happier keeping your current job and just doing your craft at the weekend!
Building a successful crafts business will mean going outside your comfort zone a bit, from time to time. Blogging is fast, simple and surprisingly powerful but there will be a few things you need to learn. Most crafts people enjoy acquiring new skills so that's not going to stop you.
The financial investment in technology and software is tiny. You already have a computer, a lot of the software can be had for free. There has never been a time when profitability can be achieved so quickly after starting up.
For the vast majority of people the decision to build a crafts business online is not a question of money, it's a question of desire and determination. If you've got those, you can learn the rest. Nothing can stop you.
