Are Prepaid Credit Cards A Good Idea?

Posted: Mar 20, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Prepaid credit cards work in many ways exactly like traditional credit cards. The big difference is that you have to put money into an account and then you can use it while there is a balance on the card. You cannot run up a balance that exceeds the amount that you have, keeping you from going farther into debt. This takes away some of the risk of traditional credit cards; it also takes away some of the benefit, however, since one thing that people like about a credit card is that it gives them the ability to purchase something that they could not buy with the money they have before they get their paycheck.

In many ways, prepaid credit cards are a great idea. For one thing, they make it possible to buy things online. This is impossible with cash or a check unless you are willing to send it through the mail. Even if you are, this process will take much longer. The person from whom you are buying will not send your purchase through until they receive the check or the money. You will then have to wait for it to be shipped to you. With a prepaid card, you can just put in the numbers and your account will be credited right away.

This also allows you to carry your money around without the fear of it being stolen. If someone does steal the card, you just have to call the company and cancel it. Then they will not be able to take any of your money out. If they steal your cash, they can go spend it all right away. A card gives you the ability to have all of your money with you if you are looking to make a large purchase without having to take on any of the risk.

The next benefit is that a prepaid credit card does not require a credit check. Since you will not be running up any debt on the card, the company does not have to be worried that you will default on it. This can be very nice if you have made some financial mistakes in the past. Even if you have learned from these things and now know what you should not do, they can still keep you from getting a traditional card in the future. You can instead get a prepaid card to take advantage of all of the benefits of carrying a card.

All told, it can be seen that prepaid cards are a very good idea for people who have either ruined their credit score or who are afraid that they will spend too much if they have an unlimited balance and will go into debt. They allow you to make purchases within a world that is so geared toward credit cards -- with the internet, pay-at-the-pump gas stations, and much more -- without risking your future. These will only allow you to use the money that you already have, so they will force you to be responsible and not to take unnecessary risks. If you do not have a card yet, you should consider getting one.
