With the credit crunch in full swing, many financial services have become more stringent about who they lend to and how much they are willing to lend them.
New Government regulations have forced card issuers to become fairer in the rates that they offer to customers, and also to be clearer about information that they provide to their customers.
Let’s face it; some of the terminology of credit cards can be very confusing to some of us. Indeed, if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into when applying for cards, you may find yourself very confused about the whole process, which could result in more financial difficulty as a result.
The new Government rules mean that credit card companies now have to give customers plenty of notice regarding interest rate rises, whilst also giving them the option of closing accounts and paying off their debts at their existing rates. The new regulations are also good news for those who have missed payments or have sought advice from debt advice services.
Card providers will now not increase interest rates for customers who fall into this category. This could be particularly useful for those who are currently going through financial difficulties, giving them more time in order to evaluate their finances and sort out new payment plans.
Despite these changes, it is always advisable to be very careful when applying for and using credit cards, if you don’t watch your spending on them and keep an eye on the interest-free period, you may very well find yourself paying more than you thought.
By staying credit savvy you can help yourself avoid any hidden costs and ensure that you stay financially stable by simply being vigilant of any small changes, or by adjusting your spending accordingly.
