How to build your credit rating

Posted: Nov 17, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Poor credit is a problem that can affect many areas of our lives. We need credit to purchase vital things that we may not have the money for, but which we would find it difficult to function without throughout our day to day lives. Credit is such an inevitable fact of our life that keeping it in good shape is certainly a necessity these days.

There are many options for building good credit and one of the quickest ways to is to simply apply for a credit card. But rather than applying for a standard card, you should start with one that is tailored to meet a specific need. This is because applying for a standard card before your rating supports the requirement can place unnecessary negative marks on your report. In other words, each time you apply for a credit card and are turned down it is recorded negatively on your report.

Once you have obtained a credit card you need to use it regularly and pay the balance off in full each month. Your goal should be to use your card to cover an expense that you would normally pay for, like fuel or perhaps some of the utility bills. Therefore, instead of spending the cash you can save it and use it to pay your charges in full when the bill comes in.

After using your card responsibly for some time you should check on your credit progress. Request a free credit report from a credit agency. This will allow you to know exactly what you have as far as all your debts are concerned and you will have a better idea of what you need to do in order to keep yourself on the right track. If you are still not happy with your progress so far you can apply for one of the secured credit cards that can have a major positive impact on your credit report. However, it is extremely important to make sure your card is not reported as secured; otherwise this will impact negatively on your overall score.

Another good way of improving your score is to pay off the delinquent debts that are the smallest first and get as many of these paid off as possible. You might also try to apply for a small loan and make sure you are on time with the repayments. This will help you to build new and positive credit that will eventually improve your rating.

Building better credit may not happen instantly and may take some work over time. But by following these easy steps you may improve your credit score and the ability to get financial products at reasonable costs in the future.
