Who doesn't have a credit card these days?
Or perhaps a more appropriate question is
'Who doesn't have credit card debt these days'?
Think back to when you filled out the first application for a credit card. Maybe there were good intentions involved such as telling yourself "I'll only use it for emergencies, or "I will only use it to pay for the really important things I'll need. Credit card companies are counting on that actually.
A trip to the store will have cashiers asking if you would like to sign up for a credit card today?
A trip around most college campuses at the beginning of the school year will find booths set up for just such a purpose. Oftentimes you will be offered a discount on our purchases if you are approved on the spot for a credit card. Whether it be a major credit card or an in-store credit card, once you're approved, it's hard to stick to the original plan.
Credit card companies are counting on that as well.
They like, no, scratch that; they love the fact that you've been approved!
They'll treat you like royalty when you're carrying their credit card.
And most people will admit they like that feeling; fleeting though it may be.
Because once you fall behind in your credit card payment, you've just gone from royalty to serf.
All those friendly reminders now turn into angry collection phone calls and 'pay this amount immediately!' letters stuffed into your mailbox.
Not to mention the late fees that begin piling up on top of that monthly payment; and these late fees can accrue not monthly,
but daily for each twenty-four hour period the payment hasn't been received by the company.
Once you fall into this vicious cycle, it becomes harder and harder to break out of it.
You'll find yourself not only trying to come up with money you don't have,
but now you may be considering using another credit card to pay off the one you're behind on. Some credit card companies will practically insist that you do so,
and will offer you a 'discount' for transferring such a balance. By paying off one credit card with another however,
you're only delaying the inevitable. Sooner or later the money that you didn't have for one will come due on the other; and the cycle continues. Buried amidst the mounds and mounds of credit card receipts is what used to be your money.
So how do you get rid of credit card debt? How can you put an end to all this madness that once started out so innocently?
