How to Improve Your Credit Score: 4 Tips for Improving Your Credit!

Posted: Jan 10, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Did you know that your credit score plays an enormous role in determining your credit RISK, and thus the likelihood that reputable lending institutions will give you a loan?  Polls have suggested that close to a fourth of Americans don't even realize this crucial fact!  If you are looking to buy a home, a car, or anything else which requires a large loan, you are going to have to have a decent record.  Here are four tips on how to improve your credit score.

1.Keep your credit card balances LOW.

Outstanding debt can have an extremely detrimental effect on your credit.  No matter how low your current credit card limit is, don't max it out!  Banks and other lending institutions need to see that you can not only pay your credit card bills on time, but that you are cautious of putting much of anything on credit.  If your credit score is lacking, now would be a good time to start paying cash.

2. Pay your bills on time, every time.

This should be a no-brainer, but it is astounding how many otherwise-sensible people neglect to pay their bills in a timely manner.  Would you lend your own money to somebody who was habitually late on their bills?  Of course not, and you don't even have shareholders to answer to!  A good bank with a decent interest rate will not lend you a dime if you haven't shown consistent and timely bill payments.

3.Build lasting, stable relationships…with your credit cards.

One thing that can hurt even responsible borrowers' credit scores is frequent opening and closing of accounts.  Home and auto loans are "long-haul" relationships between lenders and borrowers, and the lenders obviously want to do business with people who have demonstrated good habits in the long term.  It may be best to stick with your current credit card company (or companies) and see to it that you maintain a great borrowing history for as long as possible.

4. KNOW your credit score!

You should of course always practice these good habits.  However, if you're worried about the condition of your credit or if you are about to apply for a big loan, you need to actually obtain your credit score!  It is hard to fix a problem you don't even know you have.  Besides, if your numbers are good after all, wouldn't it be nice to have the peace of mind that comes from knowing?
