The Risk of Using Credit Cards for Medical Expenses

Posted: Feb 14, 2011 |

At some time in their lives almost everyone will have medical expenses. This is almost a given. Some are routine expenses for an annual visit to your doctor, so you plan on including these charges in your budget. However, there are other medical expenses that can be not only quite unexpected, but also quite large. When this type of expense occurs in your life, you need to think carefully about how you plan to pay for it.

While large medical bills can be a challenge at the best of times, the situation can be magnified ten-fold when it is an unexpected expense. In most situations, an unexpected medical expense means that something significant has happened to your health, or the health of your spouse or child. The very nature of a health issue makes the entire situation stressful for you. You are either worried about recovering so you can return to work, or you are worrying about the health of a loved one.

History shows that when a person is under a great deal of stress, he or she does not always make rational decisions. A medical emergency can be just such a stress inducer. It is in such a situation that you might make a bad financial decision. If you know you don't have the money to pay the medical expenses, get some advice before doing anything further.

It might be a natural instinct to reach for your credit card to pay such a large medical expense. You should think twice about putting such a large expense on your credit cards. Even if you have no interest credit cards available to you, you might want to think twice about using them for paying medical dept. After all, you could be putting your entire credit history at risk if you charge an expense that you have no means of paying.

Fortunately, there are other options available. The first step is to talk to the hospital or other healthcare provider about a payment plan. You will be surprised to know that most providers will be willing to work with you in order to get paid. Many will allow you to pay over time without interest charges. This is definitely a better option than getting yourself into debt with your credit card that charges double digit interest rates on the unpaid balance.
