Trying to Cancel MyCredit: Health Care Concerns Unveiled
What do you do if the hospital cancels or denies emergency treatment because of inability to pay? What if you have no credit health? Can they do that? Actually the answer depends on the treatment.
According to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, passed in 1986, hospitals and ambulances are required to provide care to anyone needing emergency treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. There are not any reimbursement provisions, and patients can be discharged only under their informed consent or when transfer to a different treatment facility is necessary.
The act defines emergency treatment as “a condition manifesting itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity such that the absence of immediate medical attention could reasonably be expected to result in placing the individuals’ health in serious danger, serious impairment of bodily functions or serious dysfunction of bodily organs.
So it seems that the federal government has everyone’s medical care covered. Get sick and the hospital must treat you. Is this what the act says? Not at all. The act requires to treat anyone requiring immediate medical attention to avoid a possibly life threatening situation. The hospital is required to treat until you are stable. What defines stable? - The patient is conscious, alert and oriented
- The cause of the life threatening symptoms has been ascertained
- Any immediately life threatening, limb threatening, or organ threatening conditions have been treated to insure the patient does not need further care
- The patient is able to care for themselves, with or without special equipment
The cost of this care isn’t directly covered by the federal government so hospitals have to absorb the cost. Most write it off as charity but the cost remains and assures that, whatever the good intentions of the Act, the government, and the hospitals, medical care will can never be as good, or even as complete as it will for a patient with credit. Increasing financial pressures since the passage of the Act have caused many consolidations and closures. More than half of the emergency medical care in the U.S. is uncompensated. The number of emergency rooms is decreasing despite increasing demand. If you have kept your credit health in good shape you will get much better care than anyone who has no credit.
