India will go into the 2nd Test at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Mirpur, after comfortably winning by 113 runs in the first Test at Chittagong. They would be keen to maintain their winning momentum ahead of the crucial home series against South Africa in February. India don't have any problem areas as such, except for the fact that they must guard against complacency, while Bangladesh's batting will be their major concern, as the middle order capitulated twice in the first Test.
India has fond memories of the Sher-e-Bangla stadium. It was here that a unique partnership was formed. Four batsmen combined together and scored 408 runs for the opening wicket. The top 4 batsmen in that game, Jaffer, Karthik Dravid and Tendulkar all scored centuries. Yet, it was only after the dismissal of Dravid that the first wicket had actually fallen. Jaffer and Karthik had left the field due to health reasons. The Indian bowlers combined well and won by an innings and 239 runs. This victory was India's largest in Test matches.
For Bangladesh, this ground also gives them some cheer. In 2008 against Sri Lanka, they were set a target of 521 in the 4th innings, and they bravely went down by only 108 runs. The total of 413 remains their highest score ever in the 4th innings. Mohammad Ashraful scored the fastest half century in Test history in terms of minutes in this ground. He scored 50 in 27 minutes. In the match against Sri Lanka, he scored a breathtaking century and almost got Bangladesh home.
The Indian batting was solid in patches in Chittagong. Only Gambhir and Tendulkar and to a certain extent VVS Laxman, looked confident whereas the others struggled to find their feet in Chittagong. The middle order will see a swap between Dhoni and Laxman, with the former recovering from injury and the latter getting injured. This means that Karthik would likely be retained in the squad as a pure batsman.
The bowling was a little worrisome. India had no backup for Zaheer and Ishant Sharma, who bowled wonderfully in the first Test. The major worry in the previous Test was Sreesanth. His rhythm was absent and he did not look penetrative at all. By injuring himself at the fag end of the match, he may make way for Tyagi, while Harbhajan looks set to return as the premier spinner after recovering from injury. Mishra made a strong case for himself with 50 runs and 7 wickets, and India could opt to play him alongside Harbhajan. However, Tyagi was quite impressive in the Idea Cup ODI series, and he could prove to be the ideal foil for Ishant and Zaheer in the fast bowling department.
Shahadat Hussein and Shakib Al Hasan were the standout performers in the previous Test. Shakib troubled the batsman with his spin, while Shahadat bowled with good pace and venom. The batting is a big time worry though, with batsman falling to rash shots. The bowling attack looks depleted in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza, but Shahadat and Shakib have carried the attack well.
However, the inexperience of the Bangladeshi bowling was exposed in India's second innings, and they leaked runs aplenty on the 4th day. Bowlers like Shafiul Islam and Rubel Hussein will have to raise their game if they hope to keep the Indians in check.
The middle order was too fragile, with Ashraful and Nafees getting out due to poor shot selection. It wouldn't be a bad idea for Bangladesh to promote Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah up the order and push Ashraful down to number six. The former two looked the most impressive in Chittagong, and deserve a promotion so that Bangladesh can put up a better batting performance.
