Ferrython and Fireworks Cruises on Australia Day

Posted: Jan 19, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Sydney Harbour becomes a throbbing centre of festive activities on Australia Day. The harbour, with the Opera House looking on and the Harbour Bridge towering over, is the most beautiful of all venues for Australia Day celebrations.

For the last three decades, one of the most popular events of the Australia Day celebrations around the Sydney Harbour has been the Ferrython. This is a ferry race that begins at the Opera House with the firing of the historical cannon at Fort Denison and after going around the Shark Island and into the Watson’s Bay, returns to finish under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The spirit of the ferry race is a reflection of the spirit of the Aussies and vice versa.

Another feature that makes Australia’s national day celebrations more colourful is the Australia Day Parade. This is a parade of all kinds of watercraft, including boats, yachts, barges and tall ships. The vessels sail out into the harbour decked out to look their best in anticipation of the Best Dressed Vessel title of the year.

The festivities of the day do not limit to the waters of the harbour but reach out into the harbour sky in the form of the Royal Australian Air Force FA-18 aerial display. Further as the day progresses, spectacular fireworks light up the sky as a fitting finale to the day’s events.

The harbour events of the Australia Day are best watched from the comfort and proximity of a cruise boat. There are several cruises operating on the harbour on that day that take you close to all the excitement and action.

The Magistic Cruises and the Sydney Showboats offer lunch cruises that, in addition to providing freshly prepared quality lunch, are well equipped with a licensed bar and have expansive decks and reserved seating thus ensuring uninterrupted view of the daytime events from an air-conditioned environ. The Tall Ships offers a race cruise that not only provides choice BBQ and unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks, but also gives you a taste of adventure as a participant in the Tall Ship race.

If night cruising would be your preference, then there are the dinner cruises operated by the Magistic Cruises and the Sydney Showboats. All these cruise boats have expansive decks and air-conditioned interiors and they provide reserved seating. The guests do not have to scurry around from their seats to the deck and then back again to watch the fireworks as well as hold their seats. They can soak in the excitement of the day at their own leisure. While the Magistic offers a freshly prepared choice buffet with a licensed bar, the Showboats offers an a la carte dinner menu along with live entertainment that includes dance, music and magic! The Tall Ships offers a delicious BBQ, an open bar and a free view of the fireworks display.

Night or day, Sydney Harbour is the place to be in on Australia Day. During the day, the blue harbour is strewn with colourful boats, yachts, and tall ships, while the night sees a bright, spectacular, colourful explosion of light into the dark skies!
