Respecting The Traditions Of Egypt

Posted: Mar 28, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

When visiting foreign countries it is always essential for the traveller to both learn and respect the traditions and customs of the visited nation; it is for instance generally very important not to insult or cause somebody to lose face when journeying overseas

In Egypt for instance, there are many practices and traditions and when taking a holiday in this country or partaking in Nile River cruises, observing these conventions is a sign of respect and admiration for this ancient country. Although not always expected to join in with traditional way of life, tourists should have some recognition of the local way of life.

The majority of Egypt's population are Muslim and as such have a specific way of life and series of rituals. For example, pork is not always available in traditional and local restaurants.

Other customs include the inclusion of tips in transactions ranging from assistance with luggage to those who provide information to the tourist.  This is an integral part of Egyptian life and tips must be of a size which is not insulting in its meagreness.

When visiting a mosque or local church, it is vital to respect the custom of removing shoes and footwear before entering the building.  Another requirement is that bare arms must be covered at all times whilst inside the mosque.

Ramadan is one of the most well known of all of the Muslim customs. During this period lasting one month, no food or drink is consumed by the observer of this tradition. When night time comes however, this fasting ends and feasting and rejoicing is common.

Here at River Nile Cruises we specialise in Egyptian holidays especially Nile cruise deals and we can provide advice and guidance on accepted behaviour and Egyptian traditions. With extensive knowledge of local customs we are experts in Egyptian social practices.
