Many may know what a cruise ships are but few are able to grasp the enormity of just how large these vessels have become. Looking back through history large ships have often been at the centre of society’s culture. And references are easily available from the award winning Hollywood blockbuster Titanic to the ‘quirky’ woe of the infamous Black Adder.

The cruise industry has been tirelessly working away over the centuries in the aim of building, faster, bigger and more powerful ships. And we are at a point now where the ship building industry is churning out the biggest passenger ships ever.

Modern day super liners far exceed the expectations of those lucky enough to board or even approach them for the very first time. And once onboard these mammoth constructions the range of facilities and services is equally incomprehensible. Cruise liners embody the latest in building techniques as well as some of the most sophisticated technology known to man.

Super liner as a term is sometimes used for an ocean going vessels with a mass of over 10,000. The term was coined late in the 19th century when ocean liners were increasing in size and speed at a rapid pace. They were the main means of travel in the early twentieth century and popularity for these large, fast ships grew.
The lavish splendor of today’s modern cruise ships are a far cry from the sparse luxury of the ships of yesteryear, where liners were seen as only a means of getting from A-to-B.
Modern cruise ships offer passengers a bewildering array of facilities and services. And display a richness and wealth more commonly found in top hotels or million pound residences. Luxury spas, full size sports courts, rock climbing walls, ice rinks, theaters, casinos and grand dining rooms all make regular appearances on modern day super liners. And this is not to mention the large spacious decks and public lounges.
Just how these super liners cruise so graciously is a testament to how far the industry has come. And like the mystery of air travel, the science and forces involved in keeping them going mind-boggling. Here are a few of the biggest super liners.
Freedom of the seas - Royal Caribbean
Independence of the Seas - Royal Caribbean
Queen Mary 2 - Cunard
Ventura – P&O
Carnival Freedom – Carnival Cruises
