Demands for children to help couples in the discharge of irksome domestic tasks are on increase in Nigeria. It is now customary for couples soon after wedding to request for children to assist them carry out domestic chores. This is common among couples that live in Lagos. Couples request and get victims with trickiness by promising to assist them become educated but this usually turns out to be falsehood.
Once a child is child is given to the indolent husband and wife, they make the child do all sorts all of unimaginable tasks which their children cannot engage in. Education is soon forgotten and sometimes, such a child is soon pronounced a witch and an ungodly instrument of demons. They are taken to the church where deliverance becomes imperative. They are also accused of initiating their own children.
The victim child becomes a street crawler, abandoned to rotten in the streets. Before this time, she must have also learnt to go without food for days. If the child has grown, she may be sexually abused by the man of the house. The man man of the house may be wrongfully accused too in which case the child may be ordered never to enter the house when the man of the house is alone.
The reactions of suspecting, illiterate and poor parents may only be just to come over and get their child. The police never hear of such an incident except the child in question is declared missing.
The implication for the children of the slave owner is that their biological children will grow up unable to cook and discharge some other domestic tasks. As for the child-victim, he will learn to live in perpetual fear until such a time that something is done about it.
