Everyone's Irish On Saint Patricks Day
Mention Ireland almost anywhere around the world and you'll be greeted with almost immediate enthusiasm for all things Irish, from the unmistakable pint of creamy Guinness to the smoothness of triple distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey, traditional Irish folk music to pop legends such as U2, Boyzone and of course, do we dare say, Jedward. The little emerald isle has certainly made a big impact around the world.
Originating from the 17th century as a Catholic Holiday, Saint Patrick's Day is one of the better known of the patron saints celebrations on the yearly calendar.
Although much of the history surrounding St.Patrick's life remains a mystery, it is said that he utilised the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. Although the colour most often associated with St.Patrick is green as shown by the wearing and display of the shamrock and shamrock-inspired designs, the original colour associated with the saint was in fact blue.
Celebrated annually on the 17th March, Saint Patrick's day is observed around the world in countries including the UK, the United States and New Zealand. Some rather less obvious countries where people go Ireland mad for the day include Argentina, Montserrat, South Korea and Japan. Not bad for an island that's only the 20th largest in the world.
So this year, on the 17th of March, raise a glass of Guinness or other tipple, spare a thought to the legend of Saint Patrick and the Emerald Isle and join in the fun. Whether of Irish descent or not, as the sign on one of the support beams at the famous Guinness Storehouse museum in Dublin quotes, "Everyone's Irish On March 17th".
